Introduction
Tangier sits at the north-western tip of Africa, fourteen kilometres from Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar. For much of the twentieth century it was an International Zone administered jointly by several powers, which gave it a reputation for smuggling, espionage and writers — Bowles, Burroughs, Genet.
That version of the city is gone. What replaced it is a fast-modernising port with a new marina, a rebuilt corniche and a restored medina, still with the same extraordinary position: from the kasbah you can watch ships queue for the strait and see Spain on a clear day.
