Introduction
Merzouga is a small village in the far south-east of Morocco whose entire reason for existing, as far as travellers are concerned, is what stands immediately behind it: Erg Chebbi, a sea of dunes roughly twenty-two kilometres long and up to about a hundred and fifty metres high.
What makes it remarkable is the contrast. The desert around Merzouga is mostly flat black stone — hamada. Then, without warning, the sand starts, and it rises like a range of orange hills out of nothing. There is no gradual transition; you simply arrive at it.
Why visit

It is the most accessible large dune field in Morocco, and the only one that genuinely looks like the Sahara of the imagination.

The night sky here is exceptional — there is effectively no light pollution for a hundred kilometres in any direction.

It is still a lived-in desert: nomad families, date farmers, and the Gnaoua community of Khamlia all live within a short drive.

Food
Desert cooking is slow and simple: berber omelette in a clay dish, vegetable and lamb tagines cooked over coals, and medfouna — the "Berber pizza", a stuffed flatbread baked in sand — which is the local speciality of the Tafilalet. Dates come from the valley an hour north, and the tea is poured very sweet.

Merzouga sits in Amazigh territory, and Tamazight is spoken as much as Arabic. The Gnaoua families of nearby Khamlia descend from people brought north across the Sahara centuries ago, and their music — driven by the guembri and iron qraqeb — is a living record of that history rather than a tourist show.
